While traveling through Vietnam I saw hard-working women everywhere. Many were riding bicycles or scooters packed with merchandise. Some were pushing unbelievably heavy carts overfilled with goods for the daily market. I saw many women in the market preparing vegetables, fruits, and flowers for customers. In one town I watched women cutting bamboo strips and weaving them into baskets. On nearly every street there were women walking with “carrying poles” across their shoulders to display their products. Our tour group met with women who work long hours weaving blankets with traditional tools. And, we saw first hand that tour guides spend days away from home showing travelers the history, culture, and beauty of Vietnam. It certainly appears that Vietnam’s women are a major part of each city’s local economy.
